The Bishop Maurice de Sully participated in the construction of Notre Dame de Paris in 1163, which lasted more than a century and was managed by several architects. The general layout is simple and harmonic, which explains its dimension: 130 meters’ tall, 48 meters wide. The round façade eastwards presents a triple entry gate surmounted by a huge rose window and 2 tall towers reaching 69 meters’ high. Attacked by time, damaged during the French Revolution, the church was restored from 1841 by Viollet Le Duc. He reconstructed the spire of 90 meters’ high, replacing the original that collapsed in the 18th century.
Due to the nature and time erosion, and urban pollution, an authentic health report was balanced in 1988, which led to a very important second period of restoration that began in 1991.
Notre Dame de Paris was once a theatre of many historical events. Apart from that, the 0km point is situated on its parvis, from where the road distances of France are calculated.
