The Grand Palais was built for the 1990’s Universal Exhibition. As the Eiffel Tower, the construction work was relatively short (3 years). It measures 240 meters long and 40 meters high.
The whole building is a perfect combination of different materials, like steel, rock and glass. The central glass dome (one of the highest in the world) allows lights to come inside, which offers a spectacular view at night from exterior when the lights reflect.
In a very short time after its construction (in 1910), the building presented several stability problems, due to the deformation of half of his south palace’s fundaments. In 1993, the first bolts dropped. Le Grand Palais was closed. After a temporary reopening, it was conclusively closed to public in August 1993.
Since 2001, the palace is being renovated. An exceptional reopening took place from 16th September to 1st October in 2005. It is reopen since 2007.
